How to tell if you might need rotors when replacing brake pads.

I was recently reading a forum post asking about brake rotors. I thought that I might be able to show some of you that are curious about the topic what technicians look at to tell your rotors need to be replaced. This is not %100 accurate all of the time, and there are other reasons the rotors might need to be replaced, but this can show what we look at from a visual aspect to say the rotors need to be replaced. I hope this helps someone out there.

  1. Hello. The brakes were making a squealing and grinding sound. We polished the brake disks and installed new pads, but the noise still remained. Do the brake discs need to be replaced?

  2. OR go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap 0-1 micrometer and 1-2 mic, learn how to read them, measure you’re rotors, and look up the discard thickness of your rotors.

  3. Asses the damage/imperfection & Measure current thickness to orig. thickness and there’s a min. thickness measurement to operate stamped on the rotor

  4. Not sure if it’s all or most, but rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on them. Even if they look smooth and a pad slap does not bother you, if they are worn to that min thickness , consider new rotors
